The remediation of the Staříč mine continues with the demolition of the mining tower. The public and private sectors are joining forces to find a new use for the site

Extensive remediation work continues on the site of the former Staříč II mine. The demolition of the mining tower in March became a visible symbol of this work. However, industry will not disappear from this location near Frýdek-Místek. The site will be transformed into a modern business park. In addition, the search for a strategic investor will involve a unique collaboration between the State Investment and Development Company (SIRS) and private developers.

The end of one era and the symbolic beginning of another. That is how the demolition of the former Staříč mine tower could be briefly described. The history of this site began in 1962, when shaft sinking began. The actual mining of black coal began less than a decade later, in 1971. During the mine’s active operation, almost 50 million tons of coal were extracted from underground. The final decision to end mining was made in 2017, gradually turning the vast site into an unused brownfield.

The site will be given a new lease of life

But that’s not the end of the story for Staříč. The site is currently undergoing necessary remediation and physical removal of mining residues under the supervision of the state-owned company DIAMO. This will be followed by the State Investment and Development Company (SIRS), whose goal is to transform the cleaned-up brownfield into a state-of-the-art business park.

The key step in the whole process will be finding a suitable strategic investor or investors. This time, however, the state will not be alone. The transformation of the Staříč mine will be a pilot project in which the public and private sectors will join forces in the search for a suitable strategic investor.

What will this cooperation look like in practice? SIRS will offer areas across the entire market at a uniform acquisition price and with a clear definition of eligible end investors, with the state pursuing a clear goal: to support modern technological investments with high added value.

The private developer market will subsequently expand its existing range of properties to include SIRS locations and will offer them directly through its established sales channels. As part of mutual competition, it will naturally also be able to offer investors its other related services.

The result of this cooperation will primarily be a shared motivation to attract high-quality and promising investors to the Czech Republic using existing market know-how. At the same time, potential interested parties will still have the option of the end investor carrying out the necessary construction entirely on their own.
